Fàilte / Welcome

Picture
Margaret Stewart is an award-winning Gaelic singer from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. A native Gael and Gaelic speaker, born and brought up on the Isle of Lewis, she has a deep and abiding commitment to the songs, language, and culture of her homeland. Her singing is rooted in local tradition, shaped by a close understanding of the history, landscape, and community life from which Gaelic song arises.

Margaret has released three studio albums along with a number of important collaborative recordings. She recorded two landmark duo albums, Fhuair mi Pòg and Colla Mo Rùn, with pipers Allan MacDonald and Iain MacDonald, and her solo album Togaidh mi mo Sheòlta was released on the Greentrax Recordings label. She continues to develop performances and recording projects with some of Gaeldom’s finest musicians and regularly performs with harp virtuoso Ingrid Henderson as well as her brother, the renowned fiddler and pianist Allan Henderson.

Alongside performance, Margaret is widely respected as a mentor, teacher, and lecturer on Gaelic song and its wider cultural and historical background. Her work presents songs within the lived experience of the Gàidhealtachd, exploring the people, places, events and beliefs. She has taught and lectured at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Fèis Rois and the Ceòlas Summer School as well as outwith Scotland.

Margaret also worked as a Gaelic Song Specialist with Tobar an Dualchais / Kist o’ Riches project, where she catalogued sound recordings from archives such as the School of Scottish Studies, the Canna Collection and the BBC, bringing specialist knowledge of repertoire, language and context to the documentation of Scotland’s oral heritage.

She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Glasgow, researching community memory and the shieling system in North Lewis, work that reflects the same deep connection to place and tradition that characterises her singing.

News: On 29 January, Margaret performed at Celtic Connections in The Kalokerinos Tapes, a concert led by Gaelic singer Maggie MacInnes at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. The programme drew on the legacy of songs recorded by her mother, Flora MacNeil, for Dr James Kalokerinos, bringing this important archival material to the stage and highlighting the depth and continuity of the Gaelic song tradition.

Margaret will next appear at the Reid Concert Hall, on 20th February, 7pm, as part of UNESCO Week of Sound 2026. Event details:
