“Ceann Goirt is Aithreachas”
Songs & Oral Tradition on Highland Hospitality & Conviviality
11–16 August 2014
Last year, as part of the College’s anniversary celebrations, we were pleased to offer a new short course with the renowned Gaelic singer Maighread Stiùbhart. Because it was so successful, we are delighted to offer a follow-up course, “Ceann Goirt is Aithreachas” – Songs and Oral Traditions of Highland Hospitality and Conviviality, as part of the 2014 short course programme.
In this five-day course, Maighread will explore a selection of songs and customs associated with Highland hospitality and feasting traditions — from praise songs about whisky, wine, ale, and brandy; songs in praise of hospitality; humorous songs about weddings and ceilidh houses; and even songs about temperance and repentance. She will include material ranging from the era of the famous bardic MacMhuirich family to songs composed in the twentieth century.
This educational and enjoyable course is suitable for all levels of Gaelic speakers, from fluent speakers to learners. Fluent participants — especially those involved in stage performance — will have the opportunity for instruction in singing technique while also expanding their song repertoire. Learners will benefit from immersion in a rich living tradition, daily instruction from a leading expert in Gaelic song, improvement in pronunciation skills, and growth in Gaelic vocabulary.
As part of the course, you will also have the opportunity to visit Talisker Distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Skye. You will learn about its founding in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill and about whisky production through the centuries. You will also have the chance to taste some of this whisky (strictly for academic purposes, of course!).
